When trying to attach a file to a message or open a link within a message Outlook it is very slow or stops responding. The solution could be 1 of 3 things...

Either you have Microsoft Security Essentials installed, your Anti-Virus such as AVG has an Outlook add-in that scans attachments or another add-in is affecting the performance of Outlook.

Step 1: Login to your Computer as an Administrator or open Outlook as an Administrator by going to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14 right click the Outlook.exe and select “Run as Administrator” as shown below:

Step 2: Once Outlook opens, click File in the top left Corner, the Options as shown below:

Step 3: Once the Outlook Options window is displayed left click on the Add-ins button in the list of vertical tabs on the left as shown below:

Step 4: Click the Go... button to reveal the COM Add-ins window as show below:

Step 5: Simply uncheck all the enabled Outlook Add-ins and add them back one by one until you eliminate which Add-in is responsible for Outlook loading slowly on start up or being slow/not responding when using attachments. I recommend restarting Outlook between each attempt.

Step 6: If the above did not work you may need to check your anti-virus setup or remove Micrsoft Security Essentials. We recommend using a full Anti-Virus system like Sophos or AVG.

This really helped! Outlook was loading slow and took forever to open attachments.
Disabling the add-in helped outlook load faster and I had MS Sec essentials too - somehow :-S

Anyway thanks again for the great help!

I had similar issue on Windows XP professional with Outlook 2010 - took ages to open attachments or URLs. I had Nokia Suite running, once I closed it, issue went away.

Thanks for the tip Martin.I believe Nokia Suite allows you to synch outlook with your Nokia Device - by installing an addin within Outlook. You can follow the instructions above and look for the addin belonging to Nokia.

in my case it was caused by a TeamViewer plug-in in Outlook 2010. Also, antivirus plug-in caused some slight delay, but TV was to blame. Thanks for the tip.

Using this post, I was able to determine it was Symantec Endpoint Protection Outlook Addin. I disabled it and the attachments snap in very quickly and open very quickly..
