Windows 7 has many great features that help you to work and play more efficiently. In this tutorial we show you how easy it is to use the built-in Smart Search feature and enable Internet Search results directly from the Start Menu Smart Search.

The built-in Windows Search has been improved greatly in Windows 7 and allows you to instantly search for any content on your computer by clicking Start and typing what you're looking for right away. You can Search for Programs, Documents, Pictures, Music, Video, E-mails, Contacts and much more - so long as it exists on your computer.

  • If you have Microsoft Office installed try this as an example of how easy and fast it is to use:
  • Left Click Start
  • Type: Word

And see a list of related search items appear right in the Start Menu! Microsoft Word will be at the top of the list provided it is installed.

Now Let's move onto expanding the search capability by adding "Search The Internet"...

Search The Internet from the Start Menu:

Step 1. To enable the Internet Search in the Start Menu using your default browser Click Start and type GPEDIT.MSC to open Group Policy Editor.

Step 2. Once the Group Policy Editor has opened - in the left hand pane, go to "User Configuration->Administrative Templates->Start Menu and Taskbar" as shown below:

Step 3. In the right hand action pane, highlight then right-click to and select Edit and Enable Add Search Internet link to Start Menu.

Finally you should get the following when you click the Start button and type in search terms as shown below:
