Windows 7 Security Center "Turn On" Alert - FIX

Dec 18

Written by:

The Security Center service cannot be started

The most obvious cause of this happening is due to the registry entry for the Windows Security Center service being deleted by a virus - thus making your system that much less secure. Follow these steps to fix the broken registry entries:

BEFORE following the below procedure it is important that you ensure that your system is virus/malware free - read our Virus and Malware article for advice on 'Do it Yourself' virus / malware removal.

Step 1. If you are using any 64bit Version of Windows 7 then Copy and paste the following text into Notepad (click start and type Notepad into the quick search) then go to Step 3 or Step 2 if you are using 32bit Windows 7:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Step 3. Click File and Save and from 'Save As Type' Select All Files and type in a name for the file putting .reg at the end of whatever name you decide to use i.e fix.reg (Save it to your desktop).

Step 4. You should backup your Registry BEFORE proceeding to the next step by clicking Start then typing Regedit click Yes when prompted and when the Registry is displayed Right Click on the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and select Export and give it a suitable name and click save.

Step 5. Locate the file you saved in Step 3 and Double left click it to merge it with your current Registry - when prompted Click Yes to allow it to make changes to your computer, then you will be prompted a second time - click Yes and Restart your Computer.

Step 6. After restarting your PC the prompt to Start the Windows Security Center should have disappeared and you can check to see if the Windows Security Center Service is now showing in services and is running by clicking Start then typing Services and selecting the Services icon in the quick results menu. Once loaded locate the service Security Center and check its status.

Thanks a lot guys this fix worked like a charm! After months of no working security center and scratching my head. Have added RSS Feed to this blog and following on twitter to show thanks!

Sorry but these are the worst directions ever. They don't work unless a step was inadvertently left out. Step 5 is where it fails. "Double left click it to merge it with your current Registry - when prompted Click Yes to allow it to make changes to your computer, then you will be prompted a second time - click Yes and Restart your Computer."

????Double left click??? That does nothing but open the document.
I followed all your steps to the letter. Saved as a Notepad doc to the desktop. Saved a copy of the registry too.

You've clearly gotten the step in creating the file wrong. Your not supposed to save as a notepad document at all. Rather you need to save the file with the .reg extension.

you need to make sure the extension for the file you've created is not .txthave a look at our article on 'How to change a windows file extension'Then change the file extension from .txt to .regthen proceed to the steps. If you still continue with difficulty join our forum and we can offer more support there.Thanks.

Yes, this is a dud. Your instructions do not say to save the notepad doc as a .reg. Even when you do that I get the same error mentioned above. Time to re-install windows :-(

Hi, thank you for the help - I followed all of the steps but "Security Center" is still not showing in my Services. The prompt in my task bar is still there too. When I restarted my laptop the screen was also completely blank (I've fixed it now) which I hope is unrelated. Any ideas what to do now?

I figured out the problem many are having with the importation of this file. YOU MUST GET THE HEADER PORTION. If you only copy the values you will get the errors described above. HEADER = "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00"
If you don't, it is not a valid file and will not import if in the RegEdit and will not work with a double click even with the right file type.
